"Get Lost" Show by Deth P. Sun @ FOE Gallery Opening June 10th

Here's a preview of an interesting show that's opening in New England on Friday by local Berkeley Artist Deth P. Sun. I've seen his art work before and it has a playful haunting effect. Whimsical yet kind of morbid. Deth has painted over 80 pieces ranging from 5"x5" to 8"x10" acrylic on wood. They mostly feature this rather ambivalent looking cat with a sash or bandana wandering around with a sword and hanging out with ghosts and death. Like some kind of creepy children's book. I love it. If you check out the full flickr set, you could almost piece together your own story by picking and choosing your own paintings. What the hell is this cat doing? Where is he going? Deth P. Sun is a prolific Berkeley, CA based painter and illustrator. His work has been shown in 10-20 group and solo shows a year since graduating from the California College of Arts and Crafts in 2002 with a BFA in Painting and Drawing. When a Deth P. Sun numbered print of 100 shows up on Tiny Showcase (tinyshowcase.com) it sells out in hours. He has contributed to (among others): Chronicle Books, Giant Robot, Tiny Showcase, Urban Outfitters and Fantagraphics. FOE Gallery is proud to host Deth P. Sun for his first Massachusetts solo show on Friday, June 10th from 6:00 - 9:00 pm.







If we are to be judged by how we spend the hours of our days, Deth P. Sun spends his time doing exactly what he wants, which is creating an amazing body of work that is intertwined with his life and dreams. Sun is a prolific artist. Most days he is working on 10 different paintings at a time, so he doesn’t have to slow down while paint dries. And if he’s doing the things we all do, like eating, he might just also be drawing everything he eats for 5 months to create a zine called “The Various Things I Eat”. As a modern artist, he documents his art, process and life and sells his work on his website at www.dethpsun.com. Sun’s images are epic, heroic, charming and random. A favorite cat with an Oakland banner navigates a dream-like forest with a lantern and sword in hand, or sips a hot cup of tea curled in a blanket floating in a star-filled sky or marches and drums while imploring us to “please be brave.”
