An unexpected and wonderful extra is this awesome USB drive custom laser engraved with Mike's logo by Kurt Barbee of Laser Tag Cartel (formerly 5280 Lasers). Not only is the custom USB drive kick-ass, it contains a video showing Mike painting these toys with music by James Plotkin

Dead Presidents x Sunguts @ SDCC 2009

Dead President x Sunguts @ SDCC2009

There were more than a few ooohs and ahhhhhs when Dead Presidents pulled out these custom mini Sunguts figures. This one in particular caught my eye. The color scheme is amazing, but I also really like the sculp itself. It appears to be this crazy girl with ipod headphones wearing this futuristic outfit with Madonna cups going on. At only 3 or so inches tall, this is a perfect figure with a great sculp and wonderful signature DP custom paint application.

But the freak out moment came when you pull her head up a bit from the body to reveal it's true identity!!! It's some kind of weird Alien posting as a human!!! Forget about it. Sign me up. I'll take a baker's dozen.

My First Fucking Sucklord Toys

Sucklord @ SDCC2009

Hell hath frozen over. For years i've been trying to figure out what the big deal is over Sucklord bootleg toys. They're crude, don't look particulary cool and for the most part, are not even articulated. wtf? But at SDCC 2009, I may have come to a turning point and perhaps Sucklord has also risen to the occasion himself. For the most part, i've thought that most of his toys...well...just suck. Maybe that's part of the allure. But the toys I purchased at SDCC were different. They had some real charm. I mean look at them, Frankenstein, Green Goblin and Sleestak in astronaut suits. How fucking perfect is that? I even like the colorways.

But truth be told. Here is the real reason why everyone buys this shit. It's her. Sucklord being the Dark Lord that he is, uses this Vampire to take over your mind and convinces you to just hand him cash. Pretty simple really. These toys are just a front. They could be rocks and it wouldn't matter. But selling rocks at SDCC for $30 each might raise some eyebrows. I bet you just looking at her picture is compelling you to want to buy Sucklord's toys. Now imagine if you were to meet her in person. Exactly. You would be helpless. and so was I. Fuck you Sucklord. I can hardly wait for your next toy.

Handpainted Mini Hollis by Le Merde @ SDCC 2009

Le Merde HP Hollis SDCC 2009

Le Merde is a funny guy. He's not French, but still a fucking funny guy. I picked up this handpainted mini Hollis from him at SDCC 2009 and it is amazing. Mike (American for Le Merde) started pouring pink resin over his customs a little while ago to great success and fanfare. It also makes the toy all shiny. he even includes a special cloth to wipe away finger prints and other "assorted" bodily fluids that might otherwise ruin the finish.

Pushead @ SDCC 2009

Some fans only come to SDCC for one reason: Pushead. The chance to score a Pushead handpaint is enough to save your money all year long just to come to Comic Con, wait in line, hopefully draw a lucky number and get a coveted Pushead handpaint. This year the Pushead event was held at the Toy Tokyo booth. News that Pushead was not coming to SDCC next year made this year's show all that more important. Although Pushead did say he will be at New York Comic Con next year instead. For West Coasters, this is sad news so with a bit of hope and a pocket full of cash (or maxed-out credit cards), we massed for the event. Unfortunately, I was so caught up in the event, I didnt' get a chance to take any pics of the crowd. In fact, many of these pics are stolen from other Skullbrainers. Above is Pushead, Devilboy and Hiddy of Secret Base.

Pushead @ SDCC 2009

There was a dizzying array of handpaints this year with an HP Cococroc at the top of the list followed closely by a few "stippled" Captains and one Pirate. Pushead is extremely loyal to his longtime fans and supporters. If you were lucky enough to be one of the 40 on the "Skeletal" email list, you drew a number for your spot in the line. You also had 3 chances to improve your line position by lottery. It was pretty fun and exciting. Anyone not on the list was able to also draw a number to determine their position after the first 40 spots. My understanding is that a number of those folks were still able to score a FHP Skull Captain which is almost as beautiful as an original handpaint.

When you ask most Pushead fans what toy really represents Pushead, most will answer with the Cococroc. I used to think it was my favorite toy, the KvP, but since it's a collaboration with Kaws, I tend to agree that the Cococroc is the definitive Pushead toy. This year's HP Cococroc has really given me a new appreciation for this toy.

So won big? The apply named Pusaddict drew the #1 spot in line via the lottery. His choice? The HP Cococroc of course. But as Pushead is such a generous guy, he also got this insane bonus pack. You couldn't find a happier dude at the show...! Congratulations Pusaddict!

Above pics stolen from Darth Hank, Joe, Scary Andy, Devilboy, Winu. Thanks guys!!!

The following a few screen grabs from the upcoming Toy Punks DVD coming in late 2009. This is significant because I don't believe that Pushead has ever let anyone see his painting in progress let alone a film crew...!!

In addition to visiting Obitsu factory and original Marusan painter Goto-san, the Toypunks crew was fortunate to film with legendary punk artist Pushead as he hand-painted an array of his own original toys as well as a handful of figures by Rumble Monsters. In this unprecedented footage, Pushead shares some (but certainly not all) of his process with the camera, offering compelling insight into the nature of creating vinyl toys in both the Japanese and
modern underground tradition. Please look forward to it in Toypunks Vol 2, coming in winter 2009!
