BASK Tradefest @ Super 7

Tradefest Sept 26 2009 from toybot studios on Vimeo.

Last Saturday was probably the best Tradefest i've ever attended. I'm not sure why. Call it the perfect storm if you will. Some collectors flush with toys from SDCC looking to unload what they regret spending too much money on (me). Some guys who haven't been to S7 in a while looking to see what's new and what could be haggled for. It great to see some old faces and some new tradebait. While the quality of the company was suspect, the quality of the toys was beyond reproach. I mean there was some seriously good shit in everyone's pile and there were probably 10-12 piles to choose from. I wouldn't say trades were fast and furious at the get go, as the Bay Area Crew are a specific bunch, but with gems from the likes of the infamous Glenn and even B.Flynn himself, it was difficult not to want to get the trading juices flowing. I would say there were numerous trades and sometimes complicated four way trades even like below! All in all, good times and great trades. Check out the intereview with Alex Zavaleta above and he puts the Bee behind King Bee on the Spot.

Project BM! 1/6 Kaneda from the movie Akira!

1/6 Kaneda

Final pics released from the collaboration of Bandai and Medicom: Project BM! This 1/6 figure will be released in March for the not so cheap price of 18,690 Yen or just about $200 USD. Including shipping and other fees, you might be looking at close to $250...ack! The other bad news is that for this kind of money, Kaneda doesn't come with his signature motorcycle! I would guess that's gonna cost you another $100 at least. ugh...! Unless I can pick up the set for a reasonable price, I might have to give up my hope of adding to my Kaneda collection.

Yokai Creepy Peep Show

Yokai Peep Show

Several yōkai (Japanese folk monsters) inhabit the upstairs closet at the Kitarō Chaya teahouse in Chōfu (Tōkyō). Visible through peepholes in the door, these traditional monsters — which are based on old folktales from across Japan — appear in the popular GeGeGe no Kitarō manga/anime by Shigeru Mizuki, a long-time resident of Chōfu.

Above: The Otoroshi, a hairy creature depicted in Edo-period books and picture scrolls, perches atop the gates to shrines and temples, waiting to snatch up impious and ill-intentioned people passing below

The Kappa, probably the most well-known yōkai in Japan, is a mischievous and often dangerous river imp.

The Abura-sumashi (lit. “Oil Presser”), a folk monster from Kumamoto prefecture known for harassing mountain travelers, is believed to be the reincarnated spirit of an oil thief. Long ago, oil was essential for lighting and heating homes, and the divine punishment for people guilty of stealing this valuable commodity — particularly from temples and shrines — was reincarnation as a yōkai.

The Tsuchigumo is a large blood-sucking spider sometimes found under the floorboards of old houses. Details about this creature vary from tale to tale, and some theories suggest the monster’s origins can be traced back to the exaggerated and embellished stories of encounters with mountain-dwelling people of ancient Japan, who were also referred to as “tsuchigumo” (lit. “ground spiders”).

Yokai Peep Show

The Kurage no Hinotama is a jellyfish-shaped fireball (will-o-wisp) found near the sea. An account from the mid-18th century tells of a samurai who encountered one such ghostly flame on a warm breezy night at Zenshoji temple in Ishikawa prefecture. The man tried to slash the floating apparition with his sword, but to no avail. Unscathed by the attack, the fireball discharged a sticky red sap-like substance onto the man’s face

Avatar Movie Trailer For Real, Real

"A paraplegic ex-marine war veteran (Sam Worthington) is unwillingly sent to establish a human settlement on the distant planet of Pandora, only to find himself battling humankind alongside the planet’s indigenous Na’vi race in this ambitious, digital 3-D sci-fi epic from Academy Award-winning Titanic director James Cameron."

Looks pretty fucking crazy. But I dunno. Funky cross between Aliens 2 and the Dark Crystal? I guess humans are the bad guys in this movie and the indigenous aliens are the innocent victims. I'm torn. I don't know who to cheer for. Do I really want to see Aliens kicking our asses?
