datadub Riding Kaneda's Bike

datadub at Akira Exhibit

Check out Don aka datadub striking the pose on Kaneda's bike at the GENGATEN Exhibit: The Art of Otomo Katsuhiro. I think Don would do well in a post-apocalyptic Tokyo. He certainly has the facial hair for it.

As a follow-up to the awesome working Kaneda's motorcycle from Akira is this exhibition featuring like 2,125 pieces of original art of Otomo Katsuhiro. GENGATEN was planned shortly after the earthquake disaster in Japan and has taken a year to come to fruition. Part of the ticket sales will go towards charities for the victims and rebuilding efforts in the Tohoku region.

Real Working Kaneda's Motorcycle from Akira Tours Japan...!!!

Kaneda's bike from Akira

The only officially recognized replica of Shotaro Kaneda’s motorcycle from Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira manga and film is currently traveling across Japan. Shinji Tejima from the Showa Studio automobile repair shop spent seven years and approximately 10 million yen (about US$121,400) to build the motorcycle, and he is riding it across Japan to raise money for the children’s autism support group Bokura Company. Tejima started his journey in Fukuoka where he lives and is traveling south and has stopped in various cities such as Osaka, Nagoya, and on Shōdo Island.

Rotobox Custom Kaneda Celcius

Rotobox Celcius Kaneda Custom

wow, Spencer and his brother really outdid themselves on this custom Celcius. This custom hits all my buttons. I love Kaneda and his bike. I love the idea of the CI Boy pilot in a Kaneda's bike style mech walker. This one has it all. Unfortunately, it was a commission for a private collection.

This is the first figure for our Rotobox Parallel Works series. The concept of this series is that we do our version of a certain character but with a twist, like a parallel universe or a different outlook on the character, in this case, it's from the anime Akira, where Kaneda has a bike, and in our parallel works series, we did a robot instead :) but we still based the concept on kaneda's bike. The poster that we did below is based on the poster of Akira, where kaneda is walking straight to his bike.

via Art of Akira Exhibit

For serious fans and aficionados, the ToonSeum will be hosting a ticketed VIP opening of the Art of Akira. The event will feature an exclusive first look at the exhibit, presentation by curator/collector Joe Peacock, behind-the-scenes display of unframed pieces, prizes, food, refreshments, a silent auction of original art, and more.

Tickets are $25 and are available for purchase at brownpaperticket.com

The Art of Akira
When: May 7th through June, 2010
Where: The ToonSeum,
945 Liberty Ave.
Pittsburgh, PA 15222

There is no other film like Katsuhiro Otomo's AKIRA, and there probably never will be again. An obsessively detailed dystopian vision of a post-apocalyptic Japan, AKIRA single-handedly saved the Japanese film industry and changed the way the world viewed animation art forever. Now visitors of the ToonSeum of Pittsburgh will have a one of a kind opportunity to view the largest collection of AKIRA production art ever displayed to the public. Culled from over 10,000 pieces or original production art from the private collection of guest curator Joe Peacock, The Art Of AKIRA promises to be an amazing experience for fanboys and first-timers alike.

c460 400x400

ok, check out this 1/6 scale Kaneda Motorcycle from Akira! It lights up! For 39,900 Yen, I would hope it would do the dishes too...! Beautiful. But with the Kaneda figure itself over $200 and this bike coming in at $450, you're looking at $650 for the set, baller! That kinda gets you right in the eye!
