Here are two different shorts from Vimeo by two different directors both using those old green army men you had as a kid. Both interesting in their own way. The one above directed by Daniel Alexander is more sophisticated using beautiful toy photography to tell the story and give emotion to the little plastic men.
The one below directed by Sean O'Brien is more of the patriotic film you would probably make as a kid using stop animation, firecrackers, lighter fluid and a bic.
