Given all the news around the famous golfer, I would say it's still an odd choice of title for this show regardless of the Chinese Astrology. Perhaps it's an intended pun? Who knows.

You are cordially invited to join us at "For the Love of Tiger" a two-person exhibition featuring LA based artists Martin Hsu and Andrew Brandou. For those of you not able to come, we're opening our cyber doors to the exhibition for a preview. Hope you can make it to the opening reception this Thursday, Feb 11th, 7-10pm to see the rest of the show and meet the artists.



FOR THE LOVE OF TIGER
This exquisite piece features Brandou's new abstract style using natural elements to form his ferocious tiger. "I started it (new technique) because I wanted to do something "pretty". I felt my work was not really reflecting how I felt at the time, which was in love. . . . and showing that when you find that kind of love, everything is beautiful." - Andrew Brandou

Hsu gracefully compliments Brandou's Tiger with illuminated flowers and vines, while incorporating the Chinese symbol for luck. Chinese mythology believes that tigers bring good fortune, and young children dress in tiger hats for protection against evil spirits in keeping with custom.



PROTECT, REVIVE
"This piece inverts the traditional relationship of children and tigers within Chinese folklore - rather than having the Tiger protecting the children, the Children (in Tiger suits) are caring for the Tiger represented in an abstract from as a tree in the forest."

HAPPINESS EXPONENTIALLY
Hsu's piece beautifully renders the Chinese symbol for happiness in abstract form using children and tigers. Normally, the joining of happiness symbols is used in Chinese weddings to celebrate the union - double happiness.

I first met Martin at the Alternative Press Expo in SF last year. Super nice guy. Very chill. I mentioned that I liked his art and that it reminded me of the Chinese Folk art from Jinshan and Huxian. I then muttered something like "it's got that "Ni Hao Kailan" thing going on..." He immediately responded, "funny you should say that because I was a character designer on that show for a couple of years..." He then accused me of having kids cause nobody else around APE knows what Ni Hao Kailan is...lol. Anyways, proof of the encounter is here as the very gracious Martin offered to draw this sketch of Kailan which is the envy of all my daughter's classmates. Thanks Martin!

Yoskay Yamamoto Official Release Party for Koibito at Munky King, Thursday Dec. 11th!!

Munky King is proud to present the official release of KOIBITO by Yoskay Yamamoto. Long anticipated by the public, this will be the definitive release of 2008. Artist will be signing, with special custom pieces by him available as well. To show his appreciation, Yoskay has added a special surprise for a small number of customers first in line for the Koibito, so be sure to get there early! There will also be special raffles throughout the night for one of a kind pieces by Yoskay for customers at the event. Also, the Secret Exclusive Colorway has now been revealed, and will be available that night. (ed. only 150)

I definitely like the clear grey Limited Edition the most. It will be interesting to see what kind of customs he comes up with. I wouldn't mind seeing a full color version with metallic paints for the "Koi" part of the Koibito. Then maybe put the human part in jeans or something..lol.. Sounds like a fun party.

Mad Barbarians @ Munky King August 7th!!

Mad Barbarians will be doing a "Mad Rock Food" show at Munky King with the opening reception on August 7th. A few of the Mad Barbarians figures from the TTF and SDCC shows will be on hand.

Munky King @ SDCC 2008!!

One of the highlights of the Munky King Booth was this signing by Yoskay Yamamoto of his new Koibito figure. Only 150 of the black "proto" figures were released and only five were customized by Yoskay. I picked up on of these guys and they were kinda light. Like they weren't solid. They felt kinda like plastic, but might have been rotocast. Definitely not vinyl. Pretty cool figures, but I'm waiting for the painted ones to come out.









I got a gander at these wonderful Nathan Jurevicius figures in person and was reminded that these guys are HUGE!! Not sure that bodes well for your shelf space.

It's Gonna Be a Big, Big, Big Toy Week!!!!

Wow, couple of big events coming up this week. Save your duckets cause this week is gonna hurt the wallet!! First up, unless you've been under a rock for the last couple of years, you know that Luke Chueh's "Possessed" figure is FINALLY being released on Friday, May 18th to great fanfare at Munky King Melrose Ave. 100 in the uber limited black and gold variant and 800 in the normal white with blood colorway. Watch out or you might trip over the flippers!!

The next day, Saturday, May 19th , we have Bwana Spoons signing his new Edward the Gator toy in this rad exclusive "Bloodbath" Colorway at DoublePunch. Hopefully Bwana will be bringing a few of this other toys and customs along with him!! Look for more exclusive photos of this cool colorway later this week!




Finally, also on Saturday, but thankfully at night, we have Super7's 3/6 Anniversary on Saturday, May 19th 7-10pm. We celebrate Super 7's 3rd Anniversary of the store and their 6th Anniversary as a magazine!! To commemorate this festive occassion, Super 7 is releasing three different size lucky bags featuring two (2) new painted Ghost Fighters and four (4) new sculps designed by Brian Flynn in painted and un-painted versions. You gotta get the large lucky bag to make sure you get all the good stuff.



If you're a serious collector and somehow can be in SoCal on Friday and then NorCal on Saturday, aside from travel expenses, you're looking at throwing down around $500 in toys for the weekend. This includes both versions of Possessed, Bloodbath Edward the Gator and the large Super 7 Lucky Bag. Were not even including any of the other toys you might buy while you're at these three toy stores!! Ugh, my credit card is warping already just thinking about it!!
