Ring Clock: Cool or Craptastic?

Ring Clock

This interesting ring clock caught my attention today. I like the concept: a 24-hour clock embedded on a ring. I like the way it looks and if it worked, it would be sort of cool. I'm just not sure it would work. It's supposed to have a tiny battery that can light up the numbers when you spin the ring. but I think I would prefer to have it illuminate or somehow indicate the time at a glance without having to "turn it on". Also the design is currently in 24-hour time which might be great if you're in the military but would require me to perform math which would inevitably lead me to the wrong time. It's also expensive. at around $200, it's a lot to spend on a watch, even a stainless steel one shaped like a ring. But mainly since it's still in the design phase and the fundraising video is somewhat sketchy without a lot of details, i'm skeptical it can even be made. What do you think?  Think it will work?  Put your money where your mouth is: Fund the Ring Clock

SEIKO STAR WARS Watches

Seiko Star Wars Watches Seiko Star Wars Watches Darth Vader

Check out these new exclusive Star Wars watches from SEIKO. These are not some crappy dime store versions. At over $1800 a pop, only serious geeks need inquire. Personally I like Vader, Maul, R2-D2. They should have skipped Yoda or 3-CPO in favor of Boba Fett. Seriously, how can you leave out Fett? Check them out at SEIKO Star Wars Site

13 Unique Watches to Get Your Time On

Unique Watches
Ventura - Spark MGS
The world's first Swiss mechanical automatic digital watch channels wrist movement to a rotary mass, which then relays the momentum to a micro-generator, continuously feeding an optoelectronic time-module. Also, don't say any of that in conversation.

Nava - Ora Unica
Though it may appear confusing, the two ends of this seemingly haphazard squiggle are actually traditional hour & minute hand markers.
Unique Watches

MB&F - Moonmachine
Bulbous hour/minute indicators? Check. Displays the current moon phase using a disc modeled after the designer's face? Check. Said face surrounded by laser-pierced "stars" forming constellations?
Unique Watches

Devon Tread One
Boasting a patented interwoven system of conveyor belts, it's arguably "the coolest American timepiece ever made!", so suck it, uhhh... Timex?

Concord Quantum Gravity - $450k Watch

Concord Quantum Gravity
concord-c1_quantum-gravity_time-suspended_img2

This watch is nuts. Concord C1 Quantum Gravity. As if the designers thought to re-position all the watch parts just to see if they could. The result is a very expensive, but very unique watch that re-envisions the spacial housing that normally defines a watch. At $450k, I hope so.

An aerial bi-axial tourbillon mechanism. A vertical power reserve. Individualist seconds. A stripped-down dial and spectacular volumes: the latest specimen from the C Lab Series defies all theories. Even better, it creates its own rules: emptiness is its core material, engineering its constancy; chemistry a dare and transparency a must.Designed and developed by the C Lab Series, the C1 QuantumGravity symbolizes unrestricted and unconstrained time, where only impulse and intuition prevail.A special unit dedicated to extreme watchmaking, the C Lab Series has a mission: to push the boundaries of mechanical watch making by introducing it to new modes of expression

for all the gory technical details, check out this article from Expensive World.

Oakley Elite Full Metal Jacket Watch

oakley-full-metal-pocket-watch 400x251

Oakley is not fucking around. They are taking their hardcore watch designs to eleven with this new Elite Full Metal Jacket Watch. At $9,000, this is a spendy watch, but it converts into a pocket watch which really makes no sense at all. What Oakley customer wears a pocket watch? Personally I like the design except the pocket watch conversion and the black and white striped face. But for $9,000, there are a ton of other watches I would purchase first. Like maybe 2 or even 3 more awesome Tag Heuer watches.

Romain Jerome Space Invaders Watch...

Romain Jerome Space Invaders Watch

By agreement with Taito Corporation, RJ-Romain Jerome is paying tribute to late-20th century pop culture by launching a double limited-edition of Space Invaders watches. The two 78-piece limited series (in allusion to the year they were launched, 1978) are distinguished by their dial. One is composed of three layers of pixelated and shotpeened dies featuring hand-drawn file strokes. The 3.5 mm-sized Space Invaders are lacquered in different colors (« day » version) or coated with Superluminova (« night » version), each individually machined and hand-applied. The case, in black PVD stainless steel, measures 46mm. It has a sapphire crystal and is water resistant to 30 meters. Movement is the Swiss automatic Romain Jerome caliber RJ001-A with 23 jewels, 28,800 vph and a power reserve of 42 hours.
