Hell Hath Frozen Over. I Want These.

Huck Gee Gold Life Dunny's

Well, not entirely true. I've always been a Huck Gee fan. I was impressed with his first Samurai Dunny custom 6 or 7 years ago? When they did the production run of 8" Samurai Dunny's, I tried to get the blue one with no success. So now we have a Dunny series of these guys. 13 characters in the same Samurai, Ninja universe. I'm down. I want these. All of them (geisha not so much). I could see myself getting a case. Who wants to split it with me? Due out September 1st.

Check out more pics of this bad ass custom at ToysRevil

Huck Gee Shogun Dunnys!!

ShogunGeishaDunny_PressImage

Not really a fan of Dunny's but I do like some of Huck Gee's works. I wanted one of these custom Shogun Dunnys when they were $400 each last year, but my credit card wouldn't allow it. I'm glad I waited cause the kind folks at KR are making a nice production run. 300 of each color plus a two geishas shown above. $100 bones each being released on June 21st with the red version at KR and the blue version at select retail stores. From the sounds of things, this could be the all-time most popular Dunny! Now if only Huck would get KR to go production with those Tunks!!!

Machine Works: Elbow Grease Customs Show by Rohby!!!

rohby_promo

While not a huge fan of Dunnys, I dig any customs involving mecha. In this case, artist Rohby has been translating his love for mecha and anime series like Macross onto vinyl toys in the form of mechanized Dunnys. His notable talent is being recognized with his own show opening this weekend and going through July 15th at MyPlasticHeartNYC. Produced and curated by ShutterKICK (Jacranky from Skullbrain), this show looks like a blast! What I dig about Rohby's customs are that they are stylized, simple, elegant and not too busy. His customs almost look like they could pop off the page of a manga! For the show, you can see in the teasers that a 7" inch Dunny will be piloting a fully articulated mech ala Patlabor style!!?? How nuts is that?? I want one!! I'm dying to see what other customs he has planned for the show.

Note from Jacranky:

Thanks for the write up! Rohby hand-casts everything out of resin/ABS. All of the add-ons are scratch-built! That is what is so insane about his work. You'll never recognize anything parts as something that is pre-existing, like other artists who kit-bash or take random junk and incorporate it in their customs. Everything Rohby does is designed, molded and casted from scratch!

Each mecha has over 40 points of articulation. INSANE. There will be 8 munny mechas at the show for sale with 2 munny pilots that we'll be giving away in raffles at the opening reception this friday.

I wish I could make the show but just to give you an idea of his crazy talent, check out a couple of his earlier projects...

Gung Hay Fat Choy with NVC Crew!!!!

P2140308_fei_hung_little_buddha_web

Gung Hay Fat Choy means "Happy New Years" in Cantonese!!! Today is Chinese New Year so what could be more fitting than a special Chinese New Year Labbit and Dunny Custom diorama from the NVC Crew??!! Dr. Bao dropped me a note and gave me a little background on this amazing diorama. Apparently it all started with Kozik's five inch Labbit. They were going to customize one into a traditional Chinese Lion for a friend's wedding where it is customary to have a martial arts troupe get into these elaborate costumes with these giant Lion heads and perform the traditional Chinese Lion Dance. Well, Bao and Spive decided to keep the Chinese Lion and make this diorama for Chinese New Years adding the traditional Little Buddha, but even better: adding Wong Fei Hung!!

P2140307_side_web

Wong Fei Hung was a real Doctor and martial artist that lived in China during the 1800's who was, and to this day, is a Chinese Folk Hero - kinda like Robin Hood. You might recognize his name from movies like "Drunken Master" with Jackie Chan or most notably, Jet Li's epic "Once Upon a Time in China" series. However, my favorite would have to be Donnie Yen's amazing performance as Wong Fei Hong's father in "Iron Monkey"!! This one is prolly one of my all-time favorite Martial Arts movie!!

Back to NVC Crew's diorama, it wasn't easy to dress the Labbit as a Chinese Lion! It took Dr. Bao three times before he found just the right fur that looked appropriate for the Chinese Lion! Also he needed something that would tie everything together which was the Chinese Gate from which the Lion would eat at the lettuce while the firecrackers went off to scare the evil demons!!

I'm really happy that Dr. Bao and Spive decided to honor one of China's most beloved folk heroes for Chinese New Year!! Check out Dr. Bao busting out some of his Wu Shu!! Jet Li better watch out!!
