John Carter Trailer: Rip Off or Originator?

Lots of buzz around this trailer for "John Carter". A lot of people are saying it's a rip off of Star Wars, Avatar, Conan the Barbarian, etc. Based on this trailer from a CGI aesthetic POV, I don't disagree. But what many probably don't realize is that "John Carter of Mars" was published in 1964.
Fans of Burroughs might argue that the above movies are a rip-off of "John Carter of Mars"

CORRECTION: Thanks for the all the comments and emails. The Movie is based on "A Princess of Mars" which was originally published as a magazine serial in 1912 and then made into a book in 1917.

From Academy Award®--winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton comes "John Carter"—a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars). "John Carter" is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.

  1. 1964? The John Carter stories date back to 1912! Next year is the 100th anniversary of the first book <a href="http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Princess_of_Mars>A Princess of Mars</a>.

  4. Thanks everyone for the comments. I agree, if the movie is based on the first book where John Carter showed up: "A Princess of Mars", then you're right, were talking 1912.
